A {Memory} Quilt for a Little Girl

With my sisters passing {previous post} I REALLY struggled {explains my absence . . . sorry guys!}, and with everything that was in me a lot of the pain I was {and still am} feeling was directed toward this sweet girl and the fact that she's just SO young that she will most likely forget things about her mom. I immediately made it a goal to do my part in helping her remember . . . so I made her this quilt out of Charish's shirts and nightgown.

This was the night that I gave it to her. She just laid down and stared at the pictures of her mom . . . so sweet and heart wrenching at the same time.

This rocking chair was from my grandma. She gave it to my mom when Charish was a little girl . . . about Chloe's age, so I thought it would be cool to take a picture of her memory blanket on the chair she used to sit in as a toddler.

The back, binding and border are all fabrics that I bought to hold the shape a little better. Chloe just let me know that it's her "favorite blanket" . . . totally made my day.
One of my favorite pictures of Chloe and Charish swimming last summer.

  12. Hi, I'm Saige. Google Reader just suggested your blog, so I thought I'd check it out. I'd been sad earlier, having a pity party about all kinds of things--one being my Wii that we got for Christmas isn't working--when I read this post and the one before it and was in tears. Real tears. Not Wii-remote-isn't-working tears--reading your posts put things in perspective for me. I am so sorry for your loss. Having a dear sister of my own, I can only imagine what you must be going through. What an amazing gift you've given your niece. Her little face is so precious--it breaks my heart. As I read your blog in the coming months, I'm going to remember to pray for you and your family.

  15. A lovely idea, beautifully executed.
And so important. My foster daughter's wonderful mom died when she was 10 and now that she's 30 she doesn't remember a lot. I still talk to her about her mom and she has a few things that belonged to her. I wish she had something this personal. Your niece will always cherish this quilt!
My memere used to make quilts out of old dresses, and I have some of them. To this day, my 81 yo mom can look at one and say, "Oh that's my grandmothers dress that she wore baking.." or similar memories.

  16. I burst into tears when I saw that picture. I lost my son 4 yrs ago (3/23/06) during my 5th month of pregnancy and today I have a 2.5 yr old. I can't imagine her going thru someone having to tell her what I (or her father) was like. I LOVE that you did this for her. You are a blessing.

  18. Just wanted to tell you that I also lost my only sister (and sibling) 2 years ago. She was only 39, and it was totally unexpected. So hard. But it helps to rely on the goodness of others...even if you never ask for help in normal life, now is the time to do it. And take care of YOU. I wish I could say something to make you feel better, but just know that I am thinking of you and am praying for you and your family. Jamie jamieh@whitemtns.com

  19. Your quilt is beautiful and truly is an amazing gift for your niece. My mom passed away 2 years ago (Mar '09). She was only 56 and I was 30. Her best friend made a photo memory quilt for me and it is one of my most precious possessions! What you have made and given your niece is beyond words.
